Time Beauty Attention
In my latest show I resonate with Marcel Proust’s discovery near the end of his novel ”In Search Of Lost Time” – that a primary source for art and inspiration can be found in the past, where beauty and meaning are already shaped by time. So too I faced a similar hunt for subject matter and meaning early on in my career. It wasn’t until I discovered old photographs in a second-hand store that I found my muse. Time had etched them with nostalgia, memory, and the weight of moments once lived. They were not simply images, but unintentional works of art. Like Proust, I realised my role was not to invent, but to recognise – to give full attention to what time had already made beautiful.
This series is part of an ongoing exploration into the emotional residues of mid-century popular culture. Drawing from the visual language of classic cinema, vintage magazines and old postcards, I use imagery from the 1960s and 70s to reconstruct environments saturated with a sense of reminiscence and nostalgia.
