In the words of Dai Li…
“
Marking my 20th solo exhibition, this latest body of work, Echoes, acts as a big milestone in my art practice. My work serves as a quiet mirror to the internal landscapes of the human condition—capturing the micro-expressions, silent doubts, and private daydreams that colour our everyday lives. Having worked with stoneware for many years, the physical making process has become like muscle memory; yet, the true work remains the journey of inspiration travelling from the brain, down through the hands, and into the raw clay.
The collection explores lingering thoughts, repetitive behaviours, and the quiet internal answers we formulate in response to a changing outside world. Through rigid postures, tightly folded arms, or subtle glances out of frame, each character holds a secret dialogue with the past. Over the course of my career, these figures have evolved not as direct portraits or caricatures, but as entirely fictional entities that embody deeply familiar human qualities.
Unlike portraits and caricatures, I regard my ceramic creations as fictional. They are not you or me, or anyone we know, but they may contain qualities you and I are familiar with. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.”
